Refining

Bauxite is generally a mixture of aluminium oxides, iron oxides and clay. Alumina is removed from the bauxite by dissolving it in liquid caustic. It is then washed, dried and sent to smelters. Any wastes from the system are used for making mud bricks or as aggregate for road foundations. So nothing is wasted from the original ore.
