Which Packaging Materials?

Purpose

To begin to understand the benefits of different types of packaging materials.

Activity

Students brainstorm a list of different types of food and beverages and the type of packaging material used.

Older students can test their theories of types of packaging material used for different types of food/beverages by preparing a list of food/beverages. In groups of three or four, students test other groups and discuss the results.

Discussion

Why have manufacturers chosen the packaging material used?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of different types of packaging material?

Which foods/beverages can be packaged in different materials?

What are the differences, if any, between the packaging of foods and beverages?

For secondary students

Groups of students can set up a debate on the benefits of different packaging materials, for example: That aluminium is the best packaging material for beverages.
